Dieppe Port + Harbour Guide
For those who seek an “off the path” travel destination, consider a ferry cruise to the small port of Dieppe located in the Upper Normandy region of the northern French coast. Dieppe offers many of the same accommodations and facilities as other sea side French port cities, but for reason untold, Dieppe has yet to seal a solid reputation among foreign and domestic holiday travelers.
The harbour of Dieppe rests 150 kilometers to the north-east of Paris, France, the “city of light”, La Ville-Lumière as it is known to foreigners. Dieppe is also easily accessible from the French interior via the French highway “A13” by way of Roune, another city south of the port. The ferry terminal on the harbour is also well-marked with plenty of signage in both French and English.
Dieppe Attractions
First time visitors to Dieppe may notice a particularly unique joie de vive among the local peoples. Residents pride themselves on a rich and long cultural history that reaches back into the Middle Ages. Travelers can view the spectacular Chateau Museum, which is housed inside of the city's old medieval castle. Visitors have remarked favorably on the stunning collections and exhibitions that feature magnificent works of art or maritime artifacts from France's naval history.
Also popular in Dieppe, the war memorials commemorate the D-day invasion by the Allies in World War II which lead to the liberation of France and fall of the Nazi regime in the early 20th century. But perhaps the most spectacular attraction of this obscure French port city is the rocky landscape which cradles the harbour. In fact, the cliffs of the “alabaster coast” are recognized internationally for both its beauty and grandeur among foreign travelers.
Transportation
Once you have landed in Dieppe, there are several transportation options readily at your disposal. First, the French railway station, located a very short distance from Dieppe's town centre and quay, connects foreign and domestic visitors to Paris and the nearby town of Roune regularly and on schedule.
Also, Dieppe visitors can take advantage of the town's public bus stations located a short distance from the ferry terminal as well. Car parks offer short-term stays only, however, and is usually used by foot travelers.
